Lighting
Lighting I relate the story in one of my books about installing an excessive
amount of recessed ceiling fixtures on the advice of her decorator.
The room would have the brightness of Miami Beach on a sunny day.
When I suggested that she should add at least another switch, so they all
did not go on together, she became angry with me. She thought I was trying
to add to my profit when all I was trying to do was help correct a mistake made
by the decorator. All of this could have been avoided if the homeowner had
relied on common sense instead.
There was no conceivable event that would require all that light. Sometimes
recessed fixtures are used only for the light but most times they are used for
effect. You can highlight a painting, your fireplace, a piece of furniture,
sculpture etc very effectively with fixtures that swivel so you can point the
light in any direction.
My advice on lighting is the same as for electrical outlets & switches. Give it
some thought & map it out on paper before the installation.
